CORRUPTION IN WEST PAPUA.
Behind the Indonesia’s sham democracy, the old corrupt military elite remains the real power in Indonesia. This is the system which Indonesian operates in West Papua: – Incredibly corrupt Heads of police being bribed by illegal loggers to cover up their crimes.
It has been confirmed that the Head of Indonesian Police in West Papua, Tito Karnavian (pictured above to the right), has been given bribes at least 5 times by another police officer to protect his illegal logging and fuel-smuggling businesses which is destroying and exploiting the West Papuan people and environment. Indonesian police Adj. First Insp. Labora Sitorus (pictured above to the left) had paid the bribes to 33 police officials, including the Papua Police chief., totalling Rp 10.95 billion (US$ 959,684), to protect his illegal logging and fuel-smuggling businesses.
West Papua has the world’s largest copper and gold mines, but with corruption and injustice rife the West Papuans endure poverty and inequality while foreign companies are further enriched.
At the same time, the exploitation of minerals, rainforests and other resources of West Papua is leading to pollution, deforestation and destruction of wildlife and habitat.
The West Papuan people, who continue to struggle against oppression and for freedom, deserve our support. The Australian government supports Indonesia’s occupation — including providing military training to the Kopassus special forces responsible for human rights abuses in West Papua. It is up to us to raise our voices against it.
